Mark Avis - Director of Mathematics
I have been a teacher for 27 years and have also been a Deputy Headteacher and Headteacher of several primary schools.
I joined Ash Grove Primary in 2009 as the Deputy Head, leading teaching and learning, particularly in Mathematics and was in post throughout its journey to Outstanding in 2013.
I am a Maths Specialist Teacher and hold a Masters Degree in Primary Maths Pedagogy.
For the last couple of years, I have had two different roles in the Trust.
As the Director of Mathematics, I have led the introduction of the “mastery” approach to maths teaching and school improvement in Maths. I have written the “Aspire Mathematics Map” which is the structure for maths teaching in many of the Alliance schools and the basis for bespoke maths interventions.
I am currently leading some research into ways to improve the teaching of times tables across the North West.
As the programme Leader for Initial Teacher Education at The Aspirer Teaching Alliance, I set up the Aspirer School Direct PGCE course which we currently run in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. In the first two years of the course, we have trained over 30 new teachers.
The course is school based and trainees, who we call Associate Teachers, are guided through the initial stages of becoming a teacher by expert Learning Coaches and academic staff from the Alliance.
Outside of school life, I play the guitar and sing and am sometimes to be seen at “open mic” nights in various establishments in Cheshire and Stafffordshire.
