Course outline
Aspirer Teacher Training offer three PGCE Courses in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. They are:
- PGCE (Primary - 5-11) - UCAS Code 2M6N
- PGCE (Primary - 3-7) - UCAS Code 2V97
- PGCE (Primary - 5-11) with specialism in Primary Physical Education - UCAS Code 37CP
On each of these, you will spend the first term of the year in one school, initially working with groups and building up to some whole class teaching with lots of support.
In the first five weeks of this placement, you will spend one day a week at our Training Centre in Macclesfield in professional development days, learning about aspects of teaching such as safeguarding children, behaviour management, planning lessons and, of course, the teaching of subject areas such as Maths and English. These sessions are led by expert teachers from the Aspire Trust and Aspirer Research School.
In these first few weeks, you will also spend one day week at Sheffield Hallam University being taught by expert academic staff there.
On the other three days a week, you will be in class.
The University pays your travel expenses from your school to the University, which is directly opposite Sheffield Station!
After Christmas. you go to another school, where you will stay for the rest of the year. For around 8 weeks of this placement, you will be in class for three days a week, at the Aspire Training Centre for a day a week and Sheffield Hallam for a day a week. You will then be in school full time until the end of the year, gradually taking on more of the teaching responsibility in the class.
Additionally, Associate Teachers on the PE Specialism Course attend a week long PE course in mid August.
You will still spend the majority of time learning to be a teacher in a real classroom.
